Medical Research is one of the key important mandate of the Hospital, ATBUTH engage in wide array of Research, extending from basic and advance medical research.
Dr. Yusuf B. Jibrin is a Chief Consultant Physician in Medicine & Infectious Diseases and Associate Professor of Medicine at ATBUTH and ATBU Bauchi. After his primary and secondary education in Bauchi State, he studied medicine at the University of Maiduguri, graduated in 1992, and served the National Youths Service Corps in Akure, Ondo State. He then rejoined the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, where he specialized in Medicine/Infectious Diseases and obtained a Fellowship of the West African College of Physicians in 2003. In the same year, he was appointed Consultant Physician at the Federal Medical Center Gombe (now Federal Teaching Hospital), from where he transferred his services to the State Specialists’ Hospital Bauchi in 2009. He was among pioneer staff when the Federal Government established Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital in 2010, where he held various offices, including Head of Clinical Services & Chairman-Medical Advisory Committee (2010 – 2016), Acting Chief Medical Director (2014 – 2016), Acting Provost, College of Medical Sciences, ATBU (2017 – 2019), and Dean, Faculty of Clinical Sciences, ATBU (2017 – 2021). He was appointed substantive Chief Medical Director of ATBUTH in October 2020. Other appointments; Member, Implementation Committee of ATBU College of Medical Sciences; Selection Editor and Editorial Adviser of the journal Annals of African Medical Research and Pioneer Coordinator of the Department of Medicine, College of Medical Sciences, Gombe State University. Dr. Jibrin has authored 44 articles and conference proceedings in local and international journals. His research interests include, but are not limited to malaria, tuberculosis, cholera, HIV infection, viral hepatitis, viral hemorrhagic fevers and COVID-19. Dr. Jibrin is married with children.

The Department renders services, research and training in the various subspecialties of Internal Medicine. Nine permanent staff are Consultant Physicians specialized in Gastroenterology, Infectious Diseases, Pulmonology, Neurology, Nephrology and Cardiology, while a Consultant Diabetologist/Endocrinologist visits on weekly basis. Over 20 Registrars/Senior Registrars are currently on specialist training. Our residency training program is accredited by both the National Postgraduate Medical College and the West African College of Physicians, and efforts are underway for MSc and PhD in Clinical Sciences programs in conjunction with ATBU College of Medical Sciences. A well-equipped molecular genetics and infectious disease research and diagnostic center which opened in 2020 as a joint collaboration of ATBUTH and ATBU College of Medical Sciences. The center is part of the NCDC-accredited nationwide laboratory network for testing/detecting COVID-19 and LASSA Virus infections With a daily capacity to process 200 samples, the laboratory is currently in the third-phase of WHO Laboratory Network Evaluation. Equipment and facilities include ELISA, PCR and Tissue Culture. Ongoing research projects in collaboration with Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) Bauchi include: 1. PhD research on Raoultella planticola infection in pediatric patients by a student of Federal University Makurdi. 2. PhD research on Aedes mosquitos associated with Dangi and Zika viruses infections by a student of University of Jos. 3. PhD research on diversity of the microbial community from soil samples by a student of ATBU Bauchi. 4. MSc research on the exon genes of adenovirus-associated gut infections by a student of University of Ilorin.
